Pathways

Features on Crossroads Pathways Map
The pathways page is a history-based interactive map of the Hayward area. Each historical map, shown by clicking the map buttons, moves from the earliest Ohlone footpaths on top down to the freeways and airways of today. While exploring each map you will notice red stars which are points of interest. To get a pop-up message from a point of interest mouse-over the star. There are also fun sounds with these maps so turn on your computer speakers.

People

The people section allows you to explore the lives of 12 children in history. Each of the children are introduced by name buttons which are on the people dial. As the dial rotates through the names it displays a drawing of each child in the center and also a brief description in the personal journey/start box below. To choose a personal journey click on a name button and the dial will stop. Then click anywhere in the in the start box and the personal journey begins. Vocabulary words appear in red. Just click on the word and a vocabulary page will pop-up with the definition. This vocabulary page also needs to be closed after you use it. You may also click on most of the images in the personal journeys to get a printable enlargement. At any time in the journeys you may click on "Return to People" and you will be returned to the people dial.

Places

Crossroads places is a collection of various local places that have played important roles in the communities ....

Timelines

Crossroads timelines represent historical eras of local and California history. They move from left (further in the past) to right (more recent). Most of the timelines have more than one page and can be advanced and backed up by using the timeline navigation arrows near the top right of the page.
Detail example of Crossroads timeline
Every individual date or set of dates in the dateline has a corresponding brief description of events that year(s) in the historical event box. Every historical event box can be clicked on to instantly get additional information about the event in the historical event paragraph box below it. Most of the paragraph boxes are clickable links to pop-up pages with more information. You will see "... More" at the end of the paragraph to tell you there is more to read. You can also get to these pop-up pages by clicking on the thumbnail image above the dateline. When you're done reading an event's pop-up page you need to close it again by clicking one of the "back to timeline" links or just closing the page. Vocabulary words appear in red. Just click on the word and a vocabulary page will pop-up with the definition. This vocabulary page also needs to be closed after you use it.
